Review: Rimmel The Max Bold Curves Extreme Volume and Lift Mascara

Whew. What a mouth full. Try saying that one three times fast! Anyways, here she is...

chilling on my bed
Max is the new offering in mascaras from Rimmel. She claims to lengthen and add volume to your lashes. Now, this is excellent, because many of us have to prioritize which we want more, volume or length in our lashes, and if one little mascara can do both, that is pretty excellent.
In the past, I haven't had much luck with Rimmel mascaras, I find that they clump or flake very easily, but I was sucked in with all of the claims (and the fact it was on sale when it first came out, $10 at Priceline, wooo).

The good bits:
This mascara definitely does what it says. It has a curved brush inside to help create curl and length in the lashes, and the brush is also quite fat, which creates excellent volume (although maybe not as much volume as Maybelline Colossal, which funnily enough is also quite lengthening on my lashes). Also, I have found in the two weeks or so that I have been using this mascara, that it doesn't flake as much as other Rimmel formulations tend to. Definite plus, I tend to like my makeup to be quite long lasting.

The bad bits:
The formulation still clumps. Sigh. When you put it on you have to be very careful, as it clumps very easily. It's also very easy to comb the clumps out, but that's one extra step which is not really necessary with other mascaras.

Still, I have been wearing this mascara for two-ish weeks, and I definitely think that I will continue to use it until my two month time limit (I only keep mascara for this long to prevent bacteria build up). I am just not sure that I will repurchase. Still, that gives me the chance to try something new, right. Right.

Review: David Babaii Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

I finally worked out something about me, which is actually something quite unfortunate. I believe I have a reaction to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). After years and years having an itchy scalp (no dandruff, just itch), and constantly combing through with a fine tooth comb wondering where the hell I might have gotten nits from (and never finding nits - obviously), I had a light bulb moment. I was researching all of the chemical nasties that are in products, as I am trying to be a little bit greener with my beauty prods. The information that I was reading was talking about how SLS is an irritant and can cause skin to become tight and itchy, and it you look at it under a microscope you could see that it was becoming dryer. This twigged my interest a little, but it wasn't until I was chatting to one of my friends that the little light bulb in my head lit up. She mentioned that one of the ladies sitting next to her in the hair dressers the day before had mentioned that she had a reaction to SLS which caused her scalp to become very itchy, and once she swapped to a SLS free shampoo it went away. DING. Light bulb.

I have always been a fan of hairdresser/salon formulations however, and I wasn't keen on going completely hippie and buying an organic/natural/nothing but essential oils shampoo.  I popped in to my nearest Priceline and had a look, and in between all of the natural formulations (which I am sure that I will try one day, I have heard that many are very good) was David Babaii, sitting pretty on the shelves. Considering that Mr. Babaii is the hair dresser for Kate Hudson, who always has gorgeous hair, grabbed my attention. Also, my Priceline sells through his products like there is no tomorrow, which made me think that a lot of people must like them. Also, I had tried the hair polish when it first came out and found that it was really good for maintaining the health of my hair. Tick, tick, tick, may as well give it ago right?

Firstly, the very first day I found that my scalp was much less itchy, and I am almost the entire way through the bottle and my scalp is no longer itchy AT ALL. That's a big deal, because for as long as I can remember I have had an itchy scalp. Also, the formulation is lovely, even though it doesn't contain SLS it still foams (SLS is the foaming ingredient in many foaming gels/cleansers/shampoos), which means that your hair still feels like it is being cleaned properly. Also, the product smells divine, like coconuts. Perfect for summer, when all you want to be is a giant tropical fruit. Ha.

Here they are, just chilling in my bathroom

But the main thing, the most important thing, is that it has made my hair incredible. So soft and manageable. I have always had dry hair (comes with the territory for us blondies), and this is the best that I can ever remember my hair being. Frizz is gone. My hair is shiny (incredibly tough for blonde hair. You normally need a gallon of shine serum and even then it doesn't shine very well. Again, comes with the territory).

This is my hair having dried naturally, with absolutely no product in it.

Sorry about the vanity shot. Just very very pleased with the state of my hair! Flick-flick-swish.

Australis Make-Up Finishing Spritz

Can I just start by saying, I love how this product smells? So rose-y and floral-y and reminds me of a beauticians. It gets sprayed on my face really just because it smells so good.
Actually, it's a very helpful product as well. The product is supposed to set your make-up for all day wear, and it really does! Living in sunny Queensland means that its hot and humid at this time of year, and normally my makeup is gone about an hour after application (doesn't help i have shit combination skin either), but this little spritz definitely helps your makeup stay put! I just put a little bit on in the morning, i still have to powder away the oil in the afternoon (i hate you skin), but my makeup is not hanging around down near my neck or anything anymore. Hurrah!!

Definitely taking this one to Roma Races with me. Weeeee

Summer Sunscreen

This is honestly the best sunscreen that I have ever tried!

Ok, let me start at the beginning.

Last week I got a mole cut out of the back of my hand. Ouch! I am only 20, don't really ever sunbake, and if I am out in the sun then I always, always wear sunscreen. (I wear sunscreen everyday on my face and chest, but sometimes don't put it on my arms if I am not in the sun, I hate the greasy feeling of sunscreen).

So, I gave myself a kick in the backside (idiot, you DON'T want cancer), and went on the search for a non-greasy sunscreen that I could wear everyday and without it driving me crazy.

Enter Neutrogena Ultimate Sport. I already had the Neutogena Healthy Defence sunscreen, and I have to say that although it was "dry touch" it still felt greasy on my skin. Still, I decided to give the ultimate sport a go, mainly because it was 4 hours water resistant, and sweat proof for when I go running in the morning. I thought that it would be on par for greasiness with the Healthy Defence, but as HD was the least greasy of all the sunscreens that I had ever tried I figured the sport one couldn't be any worse. And I was right, it's BETTER!
Sporty is great, she soaks right into your skin, and literally, apart from a very very very slight, almost imperceptible film, you cannot tell that you are wearing sunscreen. Ah-may-zing!
PLUS, its 30+, sweat and water resistant (as mentioned, and really, it is, because it doesnt come off until I towel it off after swimming), and has helioplex technology, which is supposed to be photostable and not break down in sunlight.

As I said, Amazing!

UPDATED: The Jojoba Company's Pure Jojoba Oil Review

Today i bought The Jojoba Company's Pure Jojoba oil. I have it on right now, and i have to say that it feels really lovely. It soaks right into your skin, and doesnt really leave much of an oily residue. This is because Jojoba oil is closest to the skins own natural sebum, so your skin laps it up! I will have to keep you posted on how it affects my skin after a few weeks, so watch this space! I was just so excited I had to write about it immediately.

UPDATED:

Ok, so I have now been using this oil for about a week, and I can say that I am definately noticing the difference. I have been doing a hard core acne murder on my face the past few days, and I have found that where I normally end up with dry flaky skin from the treatment, instead my skin is plump and hydrated. This is great stuff! It soaks in immediately too, which is a big winner for me, as I find that rosehip oil stays on my skin and makes me look quite oily. I think Jojoba may be beating my love for rosie!

Lips that I Love

Currently adoring Australis products (when i was little i remember them being really dodgy, but lots of the new products and formulations are awesome - i have two lipglosses, the jumbo mineral bronzer and the translucent powder - see, obsessed).

Anyways, this blog today is about the Colour Inject Mineral Lipglosses, because they are gorgeous enough to get a post all to themselves.

really dodgy picture...

I have two colours, Lambada, a super pretty pale milky pink, and Disco, which is an orange. Both are really awesome colours and the formulations are really moisturizing; they contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Most importantly, the lipgloss smells AMAZING - they have a lychee fragrance and it smells damn good, and the gloss is thick enough to be long(ish) lasting, without being sticky! No more hilarious moustache when out in the wind! Weeeeeee

At least give them a smell, they at least deserve that!

Obsessions

I don't have to tell anyone twice that it is coming into summer. Everyone can feel it, the weather is becoming awesome (although it rained all day in bris today, yuck!), and the tans are coming out. Especially in Brisvegas, where we never really have a winter, the tan is out and about in full force. Hurrah!

I am currently therefore obsessed with being tan, but not from the baking in the sun (I currently have stitches in the back of my hand from a mole being cut out). This of course means that there are awesome beauty products for me to play with, so that doesn't worry me one bit. I am however very fussy when it comes to products (as i am sure that you will come to see with later posts). Products cannot be too greasy and sit like a film on my skin if they have to be there for longer than say, ten/fifteen minutes. After trying many different fake tans over the years, I have come up with a few that i adore.

Firstly, the wonderful Le Tan Fast Tan Instant Foaming Mousse. I have been using this product for about a year, and adore it to pieces. It goes on coloured, so that you can see where you have applied it, which makes application so easy. It also dries very quickly, so you don't have to hang out nude in your bathroom for half an hour, sweating away. Also, it goes on smelling all caramelly/coconutty, and doesn't have a very strong smell for the days afterwards, like some fake tanners are apt to do. I am in love.
Secondly, the Garnier No-Streaks Bronzing Spray. Now, this product is not a complete love fest like the Le Tan Mousse - i like it, but i don't love it. I like it because it sprays from any angle, which means that its really easy to spray the hard spots on your back, and it doens't go orange, it is a nice brown colour. What I don't love - it smells. Garnier have tried very hard to cover up the smell with a fragrance, but the fake tan smell is definately there in full force. Also, if you aren't careful with the spray you can end up with Oompa Loomper feet. The spray is very heavy, and falls down onto your feet more than anywhere else on your body. When applying this product as a full body spray, make sure that you put a layer of moisturizer on your feet (like you do to your knees and elbows to prevent the product grabbing as much). I had an unfortunate day where I sprayed myself with this the night before and then went to the beach the next day with bright orange feet. Not a good look! Therefore, what I tend to do with my applications of fake tan is to apply my Le Tan Mousse, and then use the spray to reach the hard to get places on my back. Winner!

Next, the Le Tan Original Tanning Cream. This product is rather new to me, I bought it last week after reading some good reviews, and I have to say that I am really enjoying it (I should become an ambassador for Le Tan). It smells delightful, and it again very easy to apply. Despite it being a cream, the product is very light weight, and only takes about 5 minutes to dry. Its awesome!

Finally comes Sportsgirl's Body Bronze. This is not a real fake tan, it doesn't contain DHA, but it gives your body a beautiful wash off bronze. Plus, it smells amazing! Definately a product for those who don't like fake tan, or who haven't had the chance to tan. Just make sure that you apply it half an hour before dressing, or maybe don't wear a white dress, because it can rub off on your clothes.

the first thoughts...

hey there internet!

I have been thinking about posting a blog for ages, however have never really gotten around to it... until now of course, smack in the middle of exam block. But hey, this gives me more chances to procrastinate and I can "pretend to be studying". Excellent.

So here goes, my thoughts on all things beauty, and all things beautiful.
